Ready for another Schiit Thunderdome?
This time, it’s a clash of ideologies. Which is the best affordable headphone amp: the Magni 3+, a super-tweaked and insanely great performing discrete amp, or Magni Heresy, an all op-amp design with even higher measured performance?
“Wait, an op-amp headphone amp from Schiit?” you might be saying. “I thought you guys were gonna go to your graves with “DISCRETE 4 LYFE” headstones!”
Yeah, and, well, times change. Read the chapter for all the details, but to cut to the chase, we decided to see what a simple, easy, op-amp based design would sound like. And it turns out it sounds pretty good! But at the same time, we thought that tweaking the heck out of the existing Magni—essentially making it a small speaker amp—also provided a compelling sonic experience.
So we ended up with two amps. And we decided to let out customers decide. Hence, a Thunderdome.
